Tosa Onagadori
Tosa Onagadori (Long-Tailed Cock) In the Yedo-era procession of the Tosa daimyu, the standard
bearer carried an otorige (an ornamental pike decorated at its head with the tail feather of the onagadori) to
demonstrate the daimyo's power. The onagadori is a rare bird, a cross between a pheasant and a totenko (brown domestic
fowl). Its tail can be up to 10 meters long. The bird has been designated as a protected species. A few of these
birds are protectively housed in Tosa Ken Center.
