Ryoma Sakamoto:Patroit of the Ishin
Kochi, Japan
Ryoma Sakamoto, a patriot of
Ishin (Restoration period), forged the alliance between Satsuma-han and Choshu-han that opened the door to the
modernization of Japan. His magnanimous character was formed in the climate of the Tosa, open to the seas. His
openness, cheerfulness, and humor are exactly the characteristics of the people in Tosa (Kochi) today. Igossou
in Tosas dialect describes the obstinate and uncompromising nature of Tosa people and is said to have been formed
by the natural environment distinguished by its convoluted topography, surrrounded by bright sea and steep mountains,
generally mild climate punctuated by violent typhoons. When you have a chance to visit Kochi, please get to know
the Tosa beyond just its startling views and delicious foods. You may be able to meet with today's Ryoma Sakamoto
in the streets, at the seaside, or on a mountain path.
This hotel in Kochi, having
the architectural design of a boat, was developed in honor of Ryoma Sakamoto. Inside the hotel are the famous hot
baths where participants bathe and dress in the traditional garments of the time of Ryoma Sakamoto.
